About

Hi — I’m John, and welcome to Dig Me Out(liers & Trends) (yes, that's a Sleater-Kinney reference). This is a small, personal blog primarily about music. Seattle's independent, listener-supported radio station KEXP runs through a lot of it, since that's where I discover most of what I listen to, but it's not a KEXP-branded thing and it's not going to stay narrowly on-topic. Expect album reviews, the occasional concert write-up, some pop-culture tangents, and, because I clearly can't help myself, the occasional deep dive into what the data behind decades of listening and "best of" lists actually says.
No ads, no sponsorships, nothing to sell. Free to read, free to subscribe.
An unofficial project. Dig Me Out(liers & Trends) is an unofficial, independent fan project. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by KEXP. KEXP is listener-funded, commercial-free radio, so if you like what you find here, consider donating to KEXP.
Where the data comes from. The Annual lists come from KEXP. Artist and album details come from MusicBrainz, a free music database built by volunteers around the world. The details are in Data Notes.
What's shared, and what isn't. The code and the specific, curated data behind each published chart are public; you can find both in the GitHub repo. That data comes from a much larger personal project with a lot more going on than any single post here needs. That larger project, along with the curation, scoring, and editorial decisions behind it, stays private. What's public is scoped to exactly what's needed to reproduce and verify what's actually shown on this site, not a dump of everything behind it. The details of how the data was captured, and where I’ve made corrections, are in Data Notes.
Everything I share here is free to reuse with credit for non-commercial purposes (CC BY-NC 4.0). If you want to use it commercially, just ask.
